My young sister was good at swimming. I was not good at all, but loved playing in the river in shallow waters.
We would have games of crossing over to the other side of the river. The strong and experienced swimmers like my young sis would swim across the river countless times and have fun.
Considering the fact that I did not know how to swim, they would put me in a small canoe and push it across the river to the deeper waters.I would scream and shout out of fear.
One afternoon, by the river, having our games as usual,a wave hit the canoe I was in.
It was on the middle of the river, I was all alone and the canoe capsized. I panicked and cried.
In that moment, I learnt number of lessons.
I taught myself to:
Leave the comfort zone, someone said "nothing happens in the comfort zone" At this point, I told myself to get out of the comfort zone. I Gathered all the courage and started throwing my hands and legs in the water. I got comfortable with the uncomfortable. And I noticed was moving to the shore. Discover yourself, discover your abilities and the challenges that can change you. It is said 'what does not challenge you does not change you' Leave your comfort zone and great things will begin to happen.
Focus: Empty your mind of any thoughts and only focus on reaching the shore.
It is just like in today world, if you want to achieve anythings, focus on that very thing until you get it. Distractions will always be there but strive to only mind your dreams.
Do not fear: The thought of being in water where crocodiles, hippos, and all dangerous reptiles and amphibians stay and play got to me and I got scared. Then I realized it was affecting my progress. I told my mind not to be afraid but concentrate.
We live in a world of big and successful people, who just by looking and thinking about them intimidates our progress because we feel inferior. Do not fear, but respect them and and their struggle. Do whatever you can to move forward.
Adjust: I learnt to adjust. In some places, the water was flowing fast and in some places the water was cool and flowing slowly. in the fast waters I would thrust my hands and legs faster, and would calm down in the slow flowing waters.
Today, we are in a changing world, social, economic, political, cultural dimensions have evolved, and its not for us to be negative and loose focus. When the light gets dim, do not let the hurt begin, let the vision live on. Find ways and means to make the best out of every situation. lets learn to adjust and understand that everyday is different but do your thing.
Be patient: do not be in a hurry to get to the shore, but be calm and hold every breath at the right time. Know when to relax your muscles and release your breath. I learnt how to be be patient and in the process renew my strength for the next thrust.
It is the same thing as the way we live today, be and remain in your lane. The sad thing is it to stop, but little progress is progress too. don't rush least you crush.
I did all these things and boom! I was on the shore. Everyone who was shouting and screaming in fear, upon seeing me they clapped and shouted for joy. They all said "wow, you have made it"
